Anne Van Lancker appointed as Gender Expert for UNFPA in Istanbul
In mid-December Anne Van Lancker, former EPF President and Belgian MEP for many years, announced that she would be leaving politics to work as a Gender Expert at UNFPA’s Eastern Europe and Central Asia Division in Istanbul. Van Lancker took her first steps into politics in 1994, when she was elected to the European Parliament. She was EPF President between 2006 and 2009.

UN General Assembly adopts 11 October as International Day of the Girl
On 20th December the United Nations General Assembly officially approved the creation of the International Day of the Girl. This initiative was proposed by the Canadian Government at the UN, and had been gathering momentum over recent months.

European Parliament declares its support for the International Day of the Girl
393 Members of the European Parliament from diverse political and geographical backgrounds have signed the Written Declaration 39/11 in support of an International Day of the Girl. Edite Estrela, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, submitted the successful Declaration along with the co-submitting MEPs Véronique Mathieu, Jean Lambert, Katerína Neved’alová and Roberta Angelilli. The eclaration of the European Parliament in favour of the initiative sends a powerful message to European leaders of the support that exists within Europe; and it does so one week before it is voted upon at the United Nations.

Day of 7 billion - EPF take European journalists to visit projects empowering girls in India


Between 16th and 21st October EPF led a delegation of European journalists to India, where we visited a range of population projects in both urban and rural settings. The journalists came from DAPD press agency (Germany), De Volkskrant (Netherlands), Le Monde (France), El Mundo (Spain), Politiken (Denmark) and Twoj Styl (Poland).

G8/20 Global Parliamentarians Summit on Girls and Population: the forgotten drivers of development.
 
 
 
16-17 May 2011 EPF and its French NGO partners (Equilibres et Populations and Mouvement Français Pour le Planning Familial) organized a Global Parliamentarians’ Summit entitled “Girls and Population: the forgotten drivers of development”. The event was hosted at the French National Assembly by EPF Vice-President Hon. Danielle Bousquet, and it brought together more than 60 parliamentarians committed to population and development issues from around the world, and from across the political spectrum.

European Parliament adopts strong language on sexual and reproductive health and rights
During its session in Strasburg last week, Members of the European Parliament adopted strong sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) language in a report authored by Hon. Edite Estrella, MEP (S&D, Portugal) on “Reducing Health Inequalities in the EU”.

March 2009: New EU campaign to tackle gender pay gap

Latest figures show that on average across the EU women earn 17.4 per cent less than men. Launching the initiative in Brussels on 3 March, employment and social affairs commissioner Vladimír Špidla demanded action "at all levels" to address the problem. "In today's economic climate, equality between men and women is more important than ever. Only by reaping the potential of all our talents can we face up to the crisis," he said.
