EPF is glad to invite you to the presentation of the book “The Christian Right in Europe” hosted by MEP Sophie in‘t Veld (Renew Europe) at the European Parliament. Join us on Thursday, 4 April 2024, from 11:00 to 12:30, at the European Parliament in Brussels (room 5G1), to learn about anti-gender movements across Europe.
The panel will feature our host together with MEP Cyrus Engerer (S&D), MEP Malin Björk (The Left), EPF Executive Director Neil Datta and editor Gionathan Lo Mascolo.
Over the past two decades, a concerning trend has been sweeping across nations worldwide, from Hungary to Italy, Portugal, the USA, and Brazil: the infiltration of the Christian Right into national and international institutions. This phenomenon has manifested in various forms, with political leaders, civil society actors, and faith leaders advocating against abortion rights, gay marriages, and transgender rights, while promoting a patriarchal 'traditional' family model alongside democratic erosion and racist conspiracy theories.
In light of these developments, the latest book edited by Gionathan Lo Mascolo, titled "The Christian Right in Europe: Movements, Networks, and Denominations", provides a comprehensive analysis of this growing transnational network. Through over 20 case studies across Europe, the book analyses the Christian Right's ideology, institutions, and strategies, shedding light on its profound impact on contemporary politics.
In particular, the chapter "Gender Ideology Battles in the European Bubble”, co-written by Neil Datta and David Paternotte, delves into the issue of gender ideology within the European bubble, examining how Christian-Right groups influence policy and public discourse in EU institutions. Through meticulous research and analysis of the different actors involved, Datta and Paternotte offer valuable perspectives on the intersection of religion, politics, and human rights in contemporary Europe.
Don't miss this opportunity to engage in critical conversations and contribute to shaping a more inclusive and progressive Europe. Join us as we confront the challenges posed by the Christian Right and work towards a future built on equality, tolerance, and justice.
