Since 2000, contraceptive prevalence has increased substantially in Africa, echoing global trends. The need for universal access to contraceptives has been recognised and at the continental level, the commitment to increase access, policies and funding for contraception is embedded in many policy and legal frameworks that have been endorsed by all African Union Member States.

Globa Contraception Atlas Africa

Approximately 60 million women in sub-Saharan Africa, use modern contraceptive methods yet roughly 50 million women have an unmet need for modern methods, meaning that they want to prevent pregnancy but are not using contraception. 73.5 million women are projected to still have an unmet need in 2030.

The Global Contraception Policy Atlas seeks to document, map and benchmark the performance of countries’ political leadership on family planning and other concrete recommendations and suggestions for how they may improve. It aims to provide a living document which introduces a common baseline on contraception policies in Africa. It scores 53 countries across the African continent on their political leadership on family planning focusing on access to contraceptives, national and international policies ensuring the access to contraceptives and finally, funding for contraceptives.

Methodology

Desk research was undertaken between September – December 2019 in partnership with a group of academia and experts who predominantly work in public health, family planning, sexual and reproductive health and rights. The experts played a key role in evaluating the criteria and in data collection. Its 3 headings, 8 criteria and 15 sub-criteria were established by a respected multi-stakeholder group of experts from the African continent, including UNFPA colleagues.
