Armenia has a population of 3 million citizens and scored 53.9% in the 2020 Contraception Atlas. It is second among the three Caucasus countries, scoring just above Georgia. The three of them are in the orange range of the ranking. There is no general reimbursement of contraceptives in Armenia and third-party consent is needed. Despite some improvements contraceptive prevalence rate remains low (39% women of reproductive age). The difficult political situation and regional conflicts hindered recent reform efforts to improve the situation around comprehensive sexuality education and contraceptive access.
Recommendations:
- Reimbursement schemes need to be integrated within the health care policy and should include adolescents and vulnerable groups. These schemes need to be evidence- and research-based, take into account cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and success rates in the long term.
- Counselling services must be integrated within the system to be able to accommodate the needs of vulnerable groups and adolescents. They should take into account the existing problems of the availability of online information and serve to destigmatise the topic of contraception.
- More effort is needed in the availability of online information on modern contraception since the modern contraceptive prevalence rate is lower (20) than the general contraceptive prevalence rate (39).
