France emerges as the second-best performer of the 2020 Contraception Atlas, with an overall score of 90.1% and is only surpassed by Belgium (96.4%). This strong performance is due to exceptional online information, and a general reimbursement scheme covering IUDs, IUSs, implants, injectables, pills, and others. The reimbursement reaches 65% of the market price, as most of the medicines are covered by the French Social Security (Assurance Maladie). Young people and non-insured persons can obtain contraceptives for free in Family Planning Centres. France has a population of 65.3 million and a contraceptive prevalence rate of 65%.
Recommendations:
- France should put effort into optimising sexual education in schools since it has a higher adolescent birth rate (9) than its neighbours. Denmark has the lowest one (3).
- France should aim at ensuring the availability of highly trained specialists as well as the availability of free contraception supplies in rural areas.
- While the reimbursement of contraceptives covers a wide range of modern contraception methods, it should cover more than 65% of the market price.
