The Parliamentary Republic of Kosovo scores 56.6% in the 2020 Contraception Policy Atlas. With a population of 1.8 million[1], Kosovo falls in the yellow category of the ranking due to a good score in policies on supplies and counselling (87.5%) but a lack of available information on access to contraception. No information has been found on different methods of contraception, financial and logistical information. Emergency and hormonal contraception are available without prescription in Kosovo but only in the private sector.
Recommendations:
- Unbiased, coherent, and detailed online information on modern contraception needs to be provided, preferably with government support and the endorsement of key stakeholder groups such as HCPs, academia, industry, and policymakers
- Since emergency and hormonal contraception are available without a prescription only in the private sector, Kosovo should work on ensuring this access in the public system too.
- Certain types of contraceptives are on Kosovo’s health system, and when the supplies are in stock, with the doctor’s prescription, they are provided for free to clients. Kovoso should focus on enlarging the list of reimbursable contraception to meet the need of women and ensure their availability in stock.
