European Contraception Policy Atlas - Russia

Russia flag

Russia scored 42.8% in the Contraception Atlas for 2020. The country with a population of over 145 million still experiences a rather high level of maternal death (17 deaths per 1000 live births) and 22 adolescent births per 1000 adolescents aged 15-19. There is no government supported website on contraception and contraceptive information is available only on the sites of pharmaceutical companies and commercial clinics. There are no reimbursements available neither for the general population nor for specific vulnerable groups. The contraceptive prevalence rate for women is 49%, decreasing to 41% in terms of modern contraception.

Recommendations:

  1. Reimbursement schemes need to be integrated within the Russian health care policy and it should include adolescents and vulnerable groups
  2. Counselling and access to information must always go hand in hand with destigmatisation and demystification of contraception. To achieve success, it is crucial to encourage better SRHR education, as well as, improved training for health care providers.
  3. Unbiased, coherent, and detailed online information on modern contraception needs to be provided with government support.
