European Contraception Policy Atlas - Spain

 Spain flag

Spain’s, home to over 46 million, has a particular structure impacting contraceptive counseling and product reimbursement, healthcare provision is a competency delegated to each of the 17 Comunidad Autónoma. Overall, Spain scores 66% in the 2020 atlas. The country’s public health system reimburses citizens for most contraceptive methods, even if the level of subvention can be higher or lower depending on the area of residence. As of November 2019, the Ministry of Health has begun reimbursing the contraception ring. There are Centres for Family Planning and Reproductive Health which provide various services, including emergency contraception free of charge and without prescription, as well as without disclosure of age or status. As to the availability of online information, Spain provides comprehensive user-friendly websites offering the reader neutral information on different contraception methods.

Recommendations:

  1. Online information should provide the reader with information on modern contraception to increase its awareness as the contraceptive prevalence rate of modern methods is lower (58) than the general contraceptive prevalence rate (60)
  2. Access to contraception and family planning services should be ensured in all Comunidades Autónomas to guarantee all citizen’s equal access to free of charge contraception
  3. Spain should put effort into ensuring sexual education in schools since it has a higher adolescent birth rate (7) than its neighbors. Denmark has the lowest one (3).
