Hon Lia Quartapelle MP

Recently, Italian EPF member Hon. Lia Quartapelle MP sat down with the British Medical Journal’s BMJ Talk Medicine’ podcast.

This series is based on the Women’s Health and Gender Inequalities published in the BMJ as part of WHO’s activities to mark Beijing+25. The aim is to inform listeners about key issues in women’s health and rights, including SRHR. Each episode takes the form of an intergenerational interview between an older and a younger leading figure, interspersed with several shorter interviews from experts in their field.

Ms Quartapelle discussed her work in the area of sexual and reproductive rights in Italy in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. She noted that the situation in Italy has deteriorated due to the pandemic, but she remains optimistic.

She recalled that “there was only one revolution in the 20th century that was not defeated. It was the female revolution. Women today live much better than my grandmother did, and my mother did, so I know things will be better but when this will happen depends on us”.
